The next day Sophie sat looking at the water running over the stones in the stream. It was twelve-thirty. Andy would be waiting for her boss, Sam, at his house by now. Her mother had called on the disposable phone Uncle Cy had given them last night and told them all she could get out of the man was that the missile played heavily into some future plan Ares had. Ares would stop at nothing to get the technology Sophie had in her head.

Sophie had spent the night curled in Nash’s protective embrace. They hadn’t discussed marriage or even love. After they made love in the fire-lit cabin, she’d told him she loved him, but he didn’t reply. Instead he kissed her forehead and pulled her into his arms to hold her. It had been a bit soon to say it, but had it really? Not when they had had these feelings for so long.

“Have you heard anything yet?” Nash asked as he walked out of the cabin with some pumpkin spice bread Zinnia had made them.

“Not yet. Nash, what can I do to help catch Ares? Everyone is looking for him, but no one is going to find him. They’ve been looking for him for years. And now he’s after me. He’s not going to stop until he has me,” Sophie said, agitated. She didn’t like sitting, doing nothing.

“You did it last night. You taunted Ares. He’s smart but just like the mythological Ares, he responds to any slight with outrage. There’s a story of him being wounded in a shootout and him complaining constantly about his minor wound. One of his personal guards told Ares it wasn’t that bad and Ares shot him dead. Your taunt will push him over the edge. He wants what he wants, and he wants it now. By defying him, you’ll cause him to act recklessly. That’s when I’ll kill him,” Nash explained as he sat on the ground next to her.

“You mean capture, right?”

Nash didn’t respond, he handed her the plate of bread and looked over the stream. Sophie took a bite of bread and didn’t push him. She trusted that he would do the right thing when the time came. His main priority was keeping her safe, and she knew that was one mission he’d never fail.
